Who are you? Where do you come from? Tell us about your family history and traditions. This is a great opportunity to learn about each other and make meaningful connections within our community.

Presentation content: Highlight something about your family culture, origin stories of where you’re from, traditions that have been handed down. Create a table top display and prepare a narative about it. It can be a broader story about the culture and traditions. Or it can be a specific story about a relative or ancestor.

Presentation format: The presenters get to tell about their project several times, not just a one-time show-n-tell as participants meander and mingle. It’s also very relaxed style of presenting one-on-one, rather than the formal “speech”.

We recommend projects that are hands-on, interactive demonstrations or have samples, hand-outs, give-aways. Make it conversational for others to ask questions and comment, not just passively listen.

Location: Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Columbia, 2701 Heyward St, Columbia, SC 29205 (Let Grow Play Club meet-up is at Grandby Garden afterwards from 1-3pm)

Purpose: Cola City Homeschoolers believe that education is two parts. Learning about yourself and learning how you fit into the world around you. It takes intentional efforts to do that. And learning is a lifelong journey, sometimes relearning, discovering something new that you never knew before, and unlearning to change your perspectives.
Recommended readings: Here’s a couple resources to inspire you with practical ways to foster more open dialogue on tough topics–with our stories.

    • A Place to Belong: Celebrating Diversity and Kinship in the Home and Beyond by Amber O’neal Johnston. This is a guide for families of all backgrounds to celebrate cultural heritage and embrace inclusivity in the home and beyond. Ideal for parent/educators who want to cultivate a home library that provides mirrors to reflect your own lived experiences and windows to glimpse into differing experiences.
    • Stories Behind Stances: Creating Empathy Thru Hearing the Other Side by  Chris Singleton. In his mission to unite people from all different walks of life, Chris explores various ways in which we can learn to see beyond our differences and embrace our shared values, hopes, and aspirations. Ideal for Adults and Teens to consider our own beliefs and biases, to listen to those whom we disagree with, and find common ground where we can build a better world.
    • Your Life Matters by Chris Singleton. Written by national speaker Chris Singleton, who lost his own mother in the 2015 Charleston church shooting, Your Life Matters teaches kids to stand tall in the face of racial adversity and fight for the life they dream of.
